Piano Music Theory Course
Theory is not an exam subject unrelated to playing, but the language foundation for understanding music. This theory course in Tai Wai / Sha Tin covers ABRSM theory grades and the Grade 5 prerequisite; led by Ms. Kannaz Kwok with 30+ years' experience, weaving theory into playing so students truly understand music.
Many students treat theory as a standalone “exam subject,” setting it aside once passed. But theory is the language for understanding a piece — key signatures, intervals, chords and cadences all directly affect how a student reads, memorises and interprets. When theory is woven into playing, a performance becomes more understood and more layered.
What's more, before entering an ABRSM Grade 6–8 practical or performance exam, you must first hold Grade 5 theory (or an equivalent), so theory is also an important gate to the higher grades. Our theory course prepares for this gate, and above all puts theory into practice in playing — so students understand music, rather than memorising for an exam.

About the Teacher
Uniting Theory and Performance
Ms. Kannaz Kwok has 30+ years of piano teaching experience and knows well that theory and playing should not be separated. Rather than treating theory as an isolated written paper, she puts it into the piece a student is playing — when a student sees a key signature and understands the “terrain” of a piece, reading, memorising and interpreting all become more logical. This is where a theory course is most valuable.
The Tai Wai / Sha Tin Piano Studio
Theory lessons take place at Ms. Kannaz Kwok's piano studio in Tai Wai / Sha Tin, where students come for lessons. Students in Tai Wai, Sha Tin and nearby areas (eastern New Territories) are welcome; those from other areas are also welcome to enquire via WhatsApp.
